Romeo thinks that he is truly in love with Rosaline, but his feelings change the second he first sees Juliet’s flawless face. In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, two “star-crossed lovers” sacrifice their lives for each other (Prologue.Chorus.6). The one concern that can possibly keep Romeo and Juliet away from each other is their family. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet; their families have been feuding for countless years; however, not even this can ever hold them back from one another. Romeo is moping over his hopeless love for Rosaline, yet in an instant his unyielding love for Juliet suddenly takes complete control over him.
Romeo, young and passionate, is incredibly “love sick” because Rosaline does not love him back. Benvolio, cousin and friend of Romeo, takes him to crash a Capulet party, so he can find someone more beautiful than Rosaline. There he lays his eyes upon a gorgeous girl dancing. Romeo is amazed with the beauty of Juliet: “O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night like a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear” (1.5.49-51). He finds her and has a conversation with her revolving around the comparison of his lips to palmers who traveled to visit a holy shrine. Juliet goes along with his comparison because she feels the same way towards him. Ignoring all of the surroundings, Romeo kisses Juliet. It is definitely love at first sight.
