In this article, Alpert discusses the drama Twelve Angry Men written by Reginald Rose. The thesis of the screenplay, places much faith on an open- minded juror, who looks at all the evidence, even some that the judge and the lawyers never suspected existed. Fonda played Juror Eight, an honest man standing alone against eleven others, who believed the boy of the slums murdered his father. All jurors, except Juror Eight, are prepared to send the boy to the electric chair. One of the jurors is anxious to finish and get to a ball game. Another juror remembers his own boy, who escaped his authority. Still another is a pleaser and wants to be part of the majority. A fourth juror adds up the evidence and finds no reasonable doubt of the boy’s guilt. The drama establishes a catechism of the important words, “a reasonable doubt” defining the action taking place on a sultriness day in a small jury room. Much emphasis was placed on twelve remarkable actors with different interest and backgrounds. Without Fonda on the jury questioning the facts of the trial, the boy’s case would not have been taken into consideration, thus simply sentencing him to death.
