Literature comes in many forms. When embarking on a story’s beginning the author’s choice of narration is more than just a simple decision of first or third person. They must consider which will be a more effective window into the lives and souls of the characters and how that choice will affect the reader. Often times committing to one style will limit the ways in which the author can weave their story. This problem did not go un-noticed by Mary Shelley when she set out to write her masterpiece Frankenstein. The story begins with a first person narrative in the form of a letter written by Robert Walton to his sister. The narration shifts to the stories actual main character, Victor Frankenstein, and in his recreating of his life the reader also receives Narration from the monster. In addition to these three main narrators we also receive third hand accounts in the form of letters written by lesser characters and recited by the monster and Victor. There is even reference made to works of other great authors such as Milton’s Paradise Lost. In short, to call Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein a simple first person narrative is like calling the Bible a book about religion. I reality the multiple viewpoints create a story as complex as the monster it is about.
