To what extent where women involved in the dismantlement of the slave system? Slavery has been known as the harshest, most repressive system of servitude within modern history for roughly two hundred years. Orlando Patterson rightly states it was ‘one of the most extreme forms of the relation of domination, approaching the limits of total power from the viewpoint of the master , and of total power from the viewpoint of the master, and of total powerlessness from the viewpoint of the slave. When slavery is looked upon, men are automatically seen as the leaders and the only ones who fought for freedom. Although in the beginning of slavery, men and women were treated equally under the whip. They were given no political, social or even moral rights. They were seen as property. It is inevitable that women would strike out against these conditions. Females adopted various tactics of resistance in an attempt to carve out varying degrees of freedom for themselves as well as to attack the system. Females expressed a wider range of responses to their enslavement than males. Due to their femininity, they employed a range of different tactics, the most popular known as ‘gynecological resistance.’ which was basically the power of their womb. The women, being in great demand to be ‘partners for men’ despite the degrading circumstances this gave women more significance.
