Some students seem naturally enthusiastic about learning, while others need teachers to inspire, challenge, and stimulate them. Effective learning in the classroom depends on the teacher’s ability to maintain the interest from the beginning. Some students will be motivated by the approval of others, some by overcoming challenges. To encourage students to become self-motivated learners, teachers can begin by making sure that students are active participants in learning. In my experience students learn through doing, making, writing, seeing, creating, and solving. Encouraging a student to answer a problem from their own knowledge is just one way to motivate the students as opposed to dampening their curiosity and motivation to learn. Expectations should be high but realistic for students. From experience a teacher’s expectations can have a powerful effect on a student’s performance. If a teacher acts as though they expect their students to be motivated, hardworking, and interested in the course, they are more likely to do just that. So, realistic expectations should be made whenever creating assignments, giving explanations, discussions, as well as exams. Too often the term “Realistic” is misunderstood. It should be known that the teacher’s expectations are high to motivate students but not so high that students will lose interest all together.
