The works of John Milton reflect the political and religious turmoil of the period, and also Milton’s religious faith. Milton wrote many political pamphlets against the control of Bishops over the English Church. He was a supporter of the Puritan revolution against the Church of England. The English Civil War lasted from 1642 to 1649. During this time, Milton composed a treatise defending the Puritan execution of the British king, Charles I.
    Following the English Civil War, Milton was made Secretary of the State for Foreign Tongues. It was during his time in this position that Milton went blind. In 1660, the monarchy was restored and Milton was imprisoned. Through all of his troubles Milton wrote some of his greatest religious works. Paradise Lost is the most major example of how Milton chose to restore Britain’s values, lost during a decade of war and disillusionment. ...
