1) According to Laurel Thatcher a deputy husband was a wife to a husband who would stand in the place of the husband if he became ill or just wasn’t able to do his usual duties or if the husband was out of town for some reason. The wife would perform the daily tasks or duties the husband was suppose to do. (This can be seen on page 76 bullet point number 3 “the wife stands in the place of the husband”).
2) I think without a doubt this empowered woman. Normally before this time the wife would not be seen publicly with the husband for example in ancient Greece, the Greeks felt the wife’s would stay in the home. And can also be seen Europe and when the colonists first got to America, they would create the women as basically slaves among the household. Their place in the family was in the house. This was one of the first times that women had authority to make decisions among the household and within the work place of the husband. As mentioned in the book on pages 78 and 79 the woman began to work a little outside the household. Because the men were usually off doing work in the forest like hunting, “fishing, farming and cutting wood” they would not be able to direct the work of other things that came to the house. So the woman would usually have control of communication if someone was looking for the husband or trading material came up.
