If there is one thing to be certain about in life, it is that life is uncertain. Change is constantly occurring all around us, and no matter how hard you try, you cannot escape it. Escaping is exactly what the people of Pleasantville are doing, without even realizing it, by keeping out change- something that could result in different ways of thinking. David watches the television show religiously, wanting so badly to be a part of the picture perfect life that the characters lead. He compares his divorced parents and rebellious sister, Jennifer, to the happily married parents of Bud and Mary Sue who always seem to laugh and get along. Throughout the course of the movie, David and the viewer are made to see that this “perfect” life is actually just a façade, and from that stems a greater appreciation for the imperfections and uncertainty of life.
It is an interesting debate, whether doing the things you love every single day can still be considered routine. Some would say that a routine is something you do mindlessly, without thought, such as: waking up at 6:30 am every morning, showering, getting dressed, eating breakfast, brushing your teeth, and then leaving for work or school. You do those things in that order because it maximizes efficiency when you get in the habit of doing something a certain way. Others would say, you create a routine such as working out before dinner every night, because you love to work out and it makes you happy to do so before you eat. In...
