The Solitude of the Country

Samuel Johnson lived in the times of wonder and confusion; also known as the age of reason and change. The 18th century was the beginning of many great and awful things, things such as the American Revolution. To me Samuel’s essay “The Solitude of the Country” was to me one of the best yet. People now, still carry the same idea of who uses society and who gives back to it; the country folk blame the city people for their lustful, addicting ways, and the city people shoot that blame right back towards the country folk. In this essay Samuel Johnson puts them all to shame. I will admit during my first time reading this essay I was a bit confused as to what Samuel was really trying to say. After going over it time and time again, I realized exactly what he meant. This world has its good and it’s bad, it is us who have to work together and try to make a change.

This essay reveals truth about the escape plan people had to isolate themselves and not become “affected” from the world of sin. Those who are considered the “country folk” of this essay were mostly religious people who were too afraid and too vain to stay where they were needed.
