English II H Mrs. Ziessler 23 November 2009 Lord of the Flies by William Golding uncovers the fallen and unredeemed natural human state; Golding sketches the enormities of which man, unrestrained by law of society or divine rule is talented by its on will. While the few may view Golding's fable as a lesson on what occurs when a small group of schoolboys are dropped on a island from a world of violence, the gifted many are able to comprehend as well as value the varying degrees of natural human emotions and decency and integrity, as given by Ralph, Simon, and Piggy are incapable to match a blood-lusting Jack, as well as the sow head-hunting roger. Through the evidence given by the conch shell, Piggy's glasses, and Simon by Golding, it is self-evident of the presence of savagery in which the rise and fall of civilization is established modeling events and patterns formerly followed in the world they left. The conch shell is brought to the boys by Ralph and piggy from chapter one and is used to unite the boys.Through it role, the conch shell is a symbol of strength of a society and order.The conch unites the boys, and empowers the one who holds it the right to speak and be heard.Given its legitimacy, the conch effectively becomes greater than itself.Just as the conch brought order and an illusion of peace, it sadly stats to crack and lose its momentum and hope it once gave the schoolboys.
