My Son’s Battle With ADHD At the age of seven my son Zachary was diagnosed with several behavioral and mental disorders, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He was first prescribed Ritalin (an ADHD medication) and Risperidal (a sleep aid) the combination of which magnified his symptoms. He became physically aggressive often striking out at me and others, such as his siblings, his teachers’ and peers. He lost interest in all of the things that he liked to do. He started isolating himself and became less social. His disorders affected his attitude, academic performance, and sense of self. Zachary’s behavior was erratic without medication followed by a bad combination of meds. It wasn’t until he began taking Methylphenidate that his behavior changed for the better. Before Zachary was prescribed the right medication he acted out at home. For instance when we would all sit down for dinner Zachary had to be standing and walking around the kitchen in order for him to eat, I would tell him in order for him to receive his meal that he had to sit down at the table to eat. Sometimes that didn’t work and he would continue to walk around and eat anyway. When I gave Zachary tasks I would have to explain it with a lot of broken down short details about what I needed him to do.
