During World War II the United States and the Soviet Union were allied in their quest against Germany. But with the fall of Germany and the closure of World War II the strengthened superpowers of the Soviet Union and the United States ended their alliance and turned away from friendship and towards rivalry in order to become the one and only superpower of the world. In the next fifty years their rivalry escalated to a war of nuclear proportion. This war was known as the Cold War. Due to many differences most specifically their different political views at the time, the United States moved further away from isolationism and toward containment of communism and were affected both home and abroad.
The main cause of the Cold War was the difference in political ideals between the Soviet Union and United States as stated in Document 1, an excerpt from the Truman Doctrine written by President Harry S. Truman. This document conveys the belief that there are two possible ways of life, or two possible political ideals. These are Democracy, where the people choose and Communism, where a small group of people with the same political ideals govern the people through inducing fear and terror in the masses. President Harry S. Truman and many Americans believed it was our right to implement a policy of containment, or that we must support free people and assist countries who wanted democracy, through methods such as the Marshal Plan.
