How do you know if you are self-absorbed? You can maybe evaluate how often you have conversations that are about you; however, according to Beebe, Beebe, and Ivy (2007), “... conversational narcissism and self-absorbed communicator style is the belief that one self is the center of the universe” (p.178). Beebe, Beebe and Ivy describe it as sometimes being a state not a trait, basically it is a temporary style of interacting rather than a persuasive characteristic of a person. I recently displayed this style.
A week ago, I came home from work only to leave again to my son’s game. Being consumed with my job before my husband could say a word I began to ramble. As we arrived, a song by Toby Keith, “I wanna talk about me” came on. My husband made a comment that I didn’t hear, laughter followed. I asked as my husband hurried inside, “What was so funny”. My daughter answered, “Mom you’re so funny. Do you realize you asked dad how his day was and didn’t give him a chance to answer? He wanted to tell you he won a fifty dollar gift card at work”. My self-awareness light bulb turned on. I immediately knew that his comment pertained to the song and he was right. I was so self-absorbed I never gave him a chance to talk. Not wanting to encourage this behavior I contemplated how to bring the moment back. At dinner I did, I asked my family “Did anything exciting happen today?” It worked.
