A DANGER TO THE GREAT LAKES
What are Asian Carp? Asian Carp are invasive fish species that are taking over the Great Lake system. More specifically, Asian Carp is the term for four different species of fish originally from China. These four fish include the silver carp, bighead carp, grass carp, and the black carp. The two particular species that have started taking over the Great Lake system is the bighead carp and the silver carp (Guarino 2010). These fish have gotten into the lakes when they were imported by farmers to remove algae from their ponds, then during flooding, escaped into the surrounding waterways, and then eventually making it to the lakes (U.S. EPA 2010). As a resident of the area adjacent to the Great Lakes and avid lake goer for recreational purposes, I believe that the Asian carp should be banned from being released into the lakes and that every effort possible should be made to remove the Asian carp that are currently in the lake. This is because they present a safety issue for people on the lakes, they are an invasive species taking over the native species of the lake, and they threaten the fishing and recreational industry in the Great Lakes.
My main concern as to why the Asian carp should be kept out of the Great Lakes is that the present a safety issue for people on the lake. These fish, which can grow up to four feet long and weigh as ...
