There are different diseases that claim the lives of millions a year. Overall statistics show cardiovascular disease also known as heart disease is the number one cause of deaths in the United States. It has taken a larger toll in African American communities than any other ethnical group. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) also known as heart disease is a condition that involves blocking or narrowing your blood vessel which cause blood not to flow to the heart. Most common heart disease is coronary heart disease. Almost 930,000 of people die of heart disease in the U.S. each year. According to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention of the National Center for Health Statistics, African Americans have accounted 100,000 of deaths of cardiovascular disease. It also states that 40% of African American women and 37% of African American men over the age of 20 encountered the disease. Even through asthma, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, AIDS and HIV has been a major affect in the African Americans communities but the number one cause of deaths in the black community is cardiovascular disease.
Minority and low income populations have a disproportionate burden of death and disability from CVD. According to CDC, the US has spent 300 billion dollars on patients with cardiovascular disease as measured in health care expenditures, medication and lost productivity due to disability and deaths.
