The transition from childhood to adulthood is known as puberty. Boys and girls achieve this at different ages. Girls usually begin to develop from ages of 9-15 years of age while boys tend to do so at a later time around 13 years of age or older. This is the period where hormonal and body changes are going on. Most adolescents like me are very concerned on their appearance as compared to those of their friends. I believe I experienced puberty at a later phase than most of my friends of the same age making my adolescent years quite a challenge.
During my middle school years this really affected my development (at least I thought so during that time), especially in my gym class! I remember being around 12 years old and most of my friends already had hair everywhere and I did not. I looked like a very tall 10 year old boy! I was fairly thin and my voice was quite squeaky. The girls would not give me the time of day. I felt so much embarrassment during those years because many of my peers were taller, heavier, and seemed so much older than me! Due to this, I was always in need to exceed everyone’s expectations including my own. I was teased by friends and I was always one of the last ones to be chosen for teams. My self-esteem was very low and I was not outgoing at all. Since I lacked the “figure” to belong to any of the school teams, I chose to be part of the academic teams.
