In the story “The Maiden, The Frog, And the Chief’s Son,” there was a man who had two wives, and each had a daughter. He favored one wife over the other, and once the wife that he disliked became very ill and died, her daughter was taken over by the favorable wife. Each day from then on, the African Cinderella was treated so horribly. Her step mother would push her around and tell her to go off and gather some wood, and make them food, in which they left her “the burnt bits at the bottom of the pot”. But every day the African Cinderella would do as they said. She now had an older brother, whom would ask Cinderella to go over to his house and eat with him. But still when she would wander back home after a long trip and was thirsty for water, her stepmother wouldn’t let her drink one or eat only but scrapes once again. Cinderella would take these little scrapes at night and feed them to the frogs, where they would eat them all up and head back into the water. One day, the day before the Festival, she was about to feed the frogs as usually, she noticed that one particular was waiting for her. This frog told her that she has always been so nice to them and to come back tomorrow morning and they will be kind to her. And so Cinderella did, but her stepmother caught her and told her “Hey-come here, you good-for-nothing girl!” to come inside and cook for them.
