Mr President, Excellencies, Heads of State and Government, Honourable Ministers and Heads of Delegation, Mr Secretary General of the United Nations, distinguished members of the delegation, I would like to convey to you the good wishes of Sudan’s government and people for successful deliberations of this meeting. The foreign policy issues of Sudan carry topics reflecting the specific priorities of the development and welfare of our people, along with redressing economic and financial crises, containing the effects of climate change and the maintenance of international peace and security. Sudan is concerned with its impacts on African States, least developed countries, small island states and countries emerging from conflict. In regard to climate change, we believe that developed nations should provide new and additional financial resources to help build capacities and develop technologies. As for internal conflicts in Sudan, our government in the south has a responsibility of maintaining peace throughout the ongoing tribal conflicts. We have signed the Darfur Peace agreement in Abuja in May of 2006 to affirm our commitment to resolving the Darfur problem. We welcome the United States as a mediator to solve the Darfur conflict, the deteriorating conditions in three regions, the economic and diplomatic blockade, and the worsening living and social conditions in the country have caused serious strains in the society.
