The Cherry (2011) website states, that the role of genetics that a child inherits from their parents is the map for their development. For a person to understand the roles genes play in development we must look at genotypes and phenotypes. A genotype is all the genes that a child has inherited and a phenotype is the how the genes are expressed through physical and nonphysical traits. Phenotypes determine height, color of eyes as well as a child’s personality. Genes are the like blueprints that are carefully put together but the outcome is always different then exacted. How a gene is expressed is based off of the surrounding genes and the communication between the genes and the environment.
There are times when genes can receive contradictory information and when this happens one of the genes will take on a dominating role. An example, my father is tall and my mother is short, I ended up being at an average height of 5’5inches tall. In my case my genes took on an additive way. There are cases when genes will take on dominate- recessive role where one parent has dark color eyes and the other has light colored eyes then parent with the dominate gene will determine what color the child eyes will be. When abnormalities occur within the genes go off track. When the chromosomes do not divide evenly one organism will have more or less chromosomes.
