Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeleton in which the bones become brittle and prone to fracture. This is where the bone loses density. Osteoporosis is diagnosed when bone density has decreased to the point where fractures occur with mild stress. This paper will explain the risk factors and incidence of osteoporosis, will list symptoms of osteoporosis, describe the diagnosis of osteoporosis, and lastly, list the prevention strategies and treatment options. Osteoporosis occurs when osteoblasts (cells in your body that reproduce new bone matter continuously) are imbalance with osteoclasts (cells in your body that continuously dissolve the old bone matter into a component material). When you have osteoporosis the osteoblasts cannot replace the bone and the osteoclasts that are breaking down are leaving the bone filled with cavities. The risk factors and the incidences of osteoporosis are menopausal, an inadequate amount of calcium, inactive life of exercise, women who smoke or drink alcohol also have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis. There are some medications such as diuretics, steroids, anticonvulsants that also can be a risk of osteoporosis. As women age estrogen levels decrease and the risk of osteoporosis increases. Women who take birth control pills during their reproductive years may reduce their risk of developing osteoporosis later in life, probably because of the estrogen that many oral contraceptives contain.
