English literature and the main principles of English literature have not transformed dramatically over time. Many of Aristotle’s basic principles for tragic heroes for example are still used in modern time as in ancient times. Aristotle depicted that a tragic hero must have a tragic flaw. This error, or mistake in their character causes a reversal of fortune which the ch aracter finds out to be in the end the cause of their own downfall. Throughout the plays, Oedipus The King and Death of a Salesman both characters Willy Loman and Oedipus Rex share the same tragic flaw of hubris in the form of arrogance and excessive pride in themselves and the people around them. Both plays show that this hubris does not create any feeling of pathos or pity from the audience.
Throughout the play Oedipus the King, Oedipus shows pride when he first enters the play on the second page saying “Here I am myself world famous Oedipus” (Sophocles, 6) From the very beginning of the play, Oedipus enters full of himself saying that he is known, liked and famous showing the reader just from the beginning how he sees himself and placing some suspicion in the readers mind that he could be a very arrogant king who is in fact full of himself. This causes the reader to not feel or connect to a king who is so full of himself and only loves his people because he rules over them. Similarly in Death of a Salesman, Willy shows self-pride when he sees his wife Linda mending her stockings and says “I won’t have y...
