Dr. Marc Baldwin ENG 2205 October 31, 2009 “Beowulf” I propose to describe three characteristics of Beowulf and how these characteristics are reflected in his actions. The first characteristic is how he was a humanitarian shown in his compassion for others. Second, his spiritual beliefs, how Beowulf asked for wisdom and strength and then gave thanks to God after victory in battle. Lastly, the personal side of Beowulf, he was a loyal friend and believed in the warrior’s code of conduct. The characteristics of Beowulf, though a fictional character, provide a pattern of qualities one could strive to achieve. So Grendel ruled in defiance of right, one against all, until the greatest house in the world stood empty, a deserted wallstead. For twelve winters, seasons of woe, the lord of the Shieldings suffered under his load of sorrow; and so, before long, the news was known over the world. (Norton, 1635) The monster Grendal had been ravaging Heorot, the palace of King Hrothgar. Danish sailors bring news of Grendal to King Hygelac of the Geats. Beowulf, supported by the wisest of his people, resolves to go to Hrothgar's aid and sets off by ship with fourteen warriors. (Enotes) When he heard about Grendel, Hygelac’s thane was on home ground, over in Geatland. There was no one else like him alive.
