THE PRE-INTERNET ERA Before the invention of the personal computer and the broad introduction of the internet people had to buy media content as “physical objects”. If they wanted to own music they had to buy a vinyl / CD, if they wanted to own a movie they had to buy it on VHS / DVD and if they wanted a book they had to go to their local bookstore. You needed many devices, such as TV set, VHS / DVD player, stereo system for consuming this media, today you can do it all on the computer. With the introduction of the internet and multi-media devices like the MP3-player this all changed. THE BEGINNINGS From the moment of the introduction of the internet and multi-media devices on you didn´t have to buy the content on physical mediums anymore - you could just download them from the internet. You just had to visit certain websites, bulletin boards or use downloading applications and you could get all the content you want comfortably from home. The only problem is that most times what you are doing was illegal or at least in a legal gray area. In this time (late 1990´s / early 2000´s) there was no iTunes Store, Amazon music store or whatsoever, so you didn´t even have the possibility to legally download media content....
