Love is not predictable, and is uncontrollable. The different characters are all tangled in the love square that is formed by Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, and Helena. In the beginning, Hermia and Lysander love each other, but Demetrius also loves Hermia. However, Hermia has no intention of marrying Demetrius because of her love with Lysander. There is Helena, who is madly in love with Demetrius. Demetrius once loved her, but then he left her to love Hermia. Then Oberon interferes with Puck, thinking he is helping the situation, when really he makes things worse. Puck spreads the magic potion over Lysander’s eyes, thinking Lysander is Demetrius. Lysander falls into love with Helena, who thinks he is toying with her. Then, Puck spreads the potion over Demetrius’ eyes, so that he, too, is in love with Helena. Helena thinks that both boys are cruelly mocking her, while Hermia is left alone and equally confused. Puck realizes his mistake, and makes amends by putting the potion on Lysander’s eyes once again, so that he may fall back in love with Hermia. This whole mix-up truly shows that you can’t choose who you love. Albeit, in the play the choice is substituted with the potion, but this is not so in real life. Also, love makes the characters lose all sensibility. All of the characters face obstacles in their search for love, just as Lysander stated; “The course of true love never did run smooth.” ...
