“Olivia”
As a head start teacher I understand the importance of making sure toddlers gain power and control over their environment. In order for toddlers to gain control over their environment properly they need to work on making good choices in the environment, appropriate responses in play, knowing the limits in the classroom, and allowing them to feel empowered by giving them control over certain situations. In my essay I hope to show and illustrate how I can facilitate the empowerment that “Olivia” desires and needs in order to become a well- rounded individual. I believe that the appropriate environment for Olivia to gain control over her environment would be for her to gain a sense of understanding that the room or play area is available for her to explore (page 61). If the child learns that they can explore and find other toys in the classroom to play with then she might not have gotten so mad at Jacob when he stole the toy from her. I believe appropriate play is when children learn to explore in their environment and use their senses to make sense of the world. Some students even learn from parallel play, which is when several students seem to be in their own world of play but in actuality they are listening and incorporating other student’s ideas into their own forms of play (page 62).
