I believe it is important to partner with families with teaching wellness and nutrition to young children. As adults we have to constantly model for children. We model by eating nutritious foods in front of the children. We also talk about nutrition with children by using the food pyramid. Byt foods using this model, children can clearly what foods are nutritious and what foods are not. However, as teachers we have to teach them the importance of exercise with young children . During morning meeting, is the best time to do
exercises with the children. They have had breakfast or snack so they can burn off that energy. We can start with doing simple stretching of the arms and legs.
You can do "Head, Shoulders,Knees, and Toes", This way, you are doing exercises and identifying body parts. Also, educate parents on how it is important for children to have breakfast in the morning to start your day. Also, parents need to expose their children to different foods because of nutritional values. You have to have different sources of proteins
other than meat such as beans. In some cultures, beans and rice are full course meals. Beans are also used for protein for breakfast.
In my experience working in child care, I have seen centers provide nutritious meals for the children. As for birthday parties, the school even have the parents provide fruit to make fruit salad.
