Questions:
1.     Should United States government policy favor certain kinds of immigrants?
2.     Should citizenship preference be given to the neediest applicants? The most talented? The most oppressed? The richest?
3.     Should applications from certain countries be given priority?
In 1921 America used a new immigration policy called the “National Origin System” to determine by a person’s country of birth whether he/she could enter as a legal alien. This system was also used to set the group’s annual immigration gap by the number of previous immigrants and their descendants (Schaefer). In my personal opinion, I strongly feel that the United States government should not favor any kinds of immigrants because most of the populations in America are immigrants from all different countries in the world. Currently there are three types of immigrants that are favored by this new policy: immigrants with families already living in the United States, refugees and those who needed to be trained in job skills. To be fair, I think that the United States government should grant citizenship to immigrants who have lived here a while and passed the U.S. government history test including a background test. I believe these standards are necessary for granting citizenship and therefore made the new policy fair.
