The Debate over Stem Cell Research
The use of stem cells for medical research could be a futuristic cure for many known and unknown diseases and injuries. However, there has been much controversy in recent years regarding stem cell research. One might question what could possibly be so controversial given these cells have a potential for offering so much hope for medicinal advancement. To truly understand the controversy one must first understand what stem cells are and where they come from. There are three different types of stem cells, all deriving from different areas: adult, embryonic, and matrix cord cells. Traditionally, opponents of stem cell research have been primarily concerned with how the embryonic cells are attained; which in turn, conflicts with proponents in the pro-life movement. Others against stem cell research argue that the practice comes dangerously close to genetic human cloning, thus, devaluing human life. However, given the wealth of medical benefits that the research may be able to provide, as well as the availability of multiple supply sources so as to not rely on the embryonic variety, it is simply illogical to dismiss and discredit stem cell research all together.
