Lying is it acceptable or not? From when we were young , we were always told not to lie, and that honesty was the best policy. However, now in today’s society lying is the way of life. People lie just to make someone else feel better or perhaps to save one’s life. We all know that lying is not something we should do, but there is certain circumstances when lying is acceptable and could be the best approach to the situation. Lying maybe acceptable if the truth would hurt someone’s feelings and lower their self esteem. For example, a couple getting ready for a 25th anniversary, the wife is getting ready and comes out and asks her husband “Does this dress make me look fat?, of course the husband is going to lie to avoid an argument on such a special occasion. Sometimes we have to tell a lie in this instance we call them white lies, and white lies just help us from starting arguments and hurting peoples feelings. There are also life and death situations that lying would also be acceptable. For example, if a patient is undergoing surgery and the patient or patient’s family ask if they will be ok, even though chances of survival are slim. The doctor or nurse will therefore tell them that everything will be all right, just so the patient stay strong. Sometimes we have to lie just to make the other person feel better at that moment and make them feel safe.
