DEA Efforts in a Fight against Drug Trafficking Kathy O’Brien ENG 122 Angela Temple August 30, 2010 Drug trafficking has been an ongoing issue for more than one hundred years in the United States. The Presidents of Mexico and the United States are working together to address the problem of illegal drugs. Cocaine, heroin, and marijuana are the three main illegal drugs that come through the Mexico border. These illegal drugs have cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives lost. (Drug trafficking in the United States, 2009) Drug trafficking is the cause of violence between countries and can lead to wars among the states. Drug trafficking has been reducing since the 1970’s but this is still an ongoing problem. It has reached the point that the U.S. State Department has issued travel alerts for Americans traveling to Mexico. Working together with the Mexican government, the DEA needs stricter laws and enforcement on the Mexican Drug Cartels to reduce drug trafficking in the U.S. The United States, one of the richest countries, is the most profitable illegal drug markets in the world. (Drug trafficking in the United States, 2009) The U.S. has estimated over seventy billion dollars each year from illegal drug trade. We have over twelve hundred National Guard troops guarding our borders but these smugglers still manage to get these illegal drugs into our country.
