As WWI concludes and as the population starts to fully recognize the sheer destruction of the War, 2 men strike up a conversation. With the year being 1919 the treaty of Versailles has been released to the public and the two men, one a German nationalist, and the other a French Nationalist discuss this document.
The Frenchman while proud of his country’s military past and present was also extremely bitter. WWI had left the French with the biggest losses compared to population as well as destruction of major industry which crippled the French economy. (Treaty of Versailles) Now the Frenchman looking at the Treaty sees it as fair and understandable. Him along with most of France’s population as well as Mr. Clemenceau believed that Germany should be “brought to its knee’s” to make sure it can never start another war (Treaty of Versailles). He explains to the German that while all sides had lost troops it was all fought on French soil. Although the German Army’s treatment didn’t compare to what they did in Belgium it was still horrific. The Frenchman even suggests that the huge figure that Germany was to pay ( 6,600 million Pounds) was fair considering the damage to infrastructure and the like.
