First, an event that brought on an escalation to the cold war was the McCarthy Trials. When there are numerous claims of indecent communism taking place within the government, the general public is bound to be weary and more paranoid about Communism and anything related including the Soviet Union. The government is looked upon as an institution that should be stable in all aspects and support the U.S.A. and the population themselves. Next, the Cuban Missile Crisis was an event that escalated the cold war tremendously due to the near certain strike by both fighting countries. When we had intelligence regarding the whereabouts of missiles present and being delivered to Cuba, a nation so very close to the homeland of America, radical measures were sure to take place ensuring protection. Lastly, another event that escalated the Cold War was the Korean War. The Korean War was the first actual battle for defense of democracy against communism. After pushing North Korea back toward China, we even began pushing them into China, as far as we could. It was only until the Chinese got involved that we backed down back to the 38th parallel. One event that brought the Cold War to an end was the election of President Gorbachev in Russia. After democratically electing Gorbachev in 1985, Russia began attempts at relinquishing their firm grip on all aspects of civilian rights. Communism’s foothold was loosening.
