Alice poses a significant question to Kitty in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass concerning the ability to safely drink what she calls “Looking-glass milk”, something a modern chemistry student would be able to properly identify as an enantiomer. Like the majority of Carroll’s work this is not simply the mundane musings of a young girl but instead carries much darker undertones concerning the chemical viability of a mirror-world similar to that which is presented in the novel, a viability which had just begun to be pondered during Carroll’s time (A time of groundbreaking discoveries in the structure of the chemical world around us). I would claim that the mirror lactose would be potable (Safe to drink), however the effects of ingesting an enantiomer, while in this case not deadly (Most likely), would most certainly not be a pleasant tasting experience for anyone as our taste buds would not properly identify it as the lactose that we consume regularly. The latter and any other differences between mirror lactose and regular world lactose can be explained by the mirroring effect that enantiomers have, which is directly linked to the physical structure of the molecule.
To truly understand the differences between the milk we consume in our everyday lives and that which is presented in Through the Looking Glass we must break into the structural differences that would be prevalent between the two carbohydrates. The first figure shows the structure of lactose, the p...
