Throughout the history of people and the world itself, change has always played a major role. Without change, there would, hypothetically, be nothing. Regardless of what your religious or scientific beliefs may be, most people believe that before there was something, there was nothing. This is reflected heavily in human literature. Even with changes in a story’s location or time, however, the overall theme of that story may stay constant. On the contrary, a change in a story’s characters will more likely than not change the fundamental meaning of the story. That being said, stories often incorporate a change in one or more of its characters’ personalities into the very meaning of the story itself. In fact, in many works, the change in the character occurs in order to show what time and the change it brings with it can do to a person. Within the works of “Jinx” by Amiee Bender, “The Little Knife” by Michael Chabon, and “Two Questions” by Lynda Barry, we can see how, over time, people can go from being one kind of person to a completely different kind, for better or for worse.
    Within “Jinx,” the reader can see the transformation of two seemingly innocent girls. Both experience a change and, in fact, it is the change in one of them which leads to the change in the other. Both girls begin the story in a typical bubbly preteen fashion, inseparable friends who have always shared everything together.
