    In the novel, “The Call of The Wild,” the main character is Buck. Buck is a civilized dog that will become primitive if savage forces overcome the force of love. In each chapter, the titles express that thought. This essay will link each chapter’s title with that theme.
    Before the first chapter even begins, it starts out with a poem. The poem emphasizes the theme of the novel. A part of the poem says, within every individual, however civilized, there lies deep within a “ferine strain.” This essentially means that there is a primitive beast within us all and it can emerge at any time.
The first chapter’s title is, “Into the Primitive.” This chapter starts out in a lovely home in the sun kissed Santa Clara Valley. This is where buck is stolen and sold to gold prospectors up north. Buck eventually falls in the hands of a man in a red sweater. This man in the red sweater represents the potential for the primitive n element in us all. The color of his sweater serves as a symbol of savagery. This is due to the red of raw meat, Buck’s blood-red eyes, and the blood he is covered with after the ferocious beating by the man in the red sweater. To sum it all up, this chapter has ripped Buck from the ease and comfort of civilization to the first encounter of primitive law, where he was beaten by a club.
