Art has played a major role in religion for millenniums. From Sumerian art (ca 2500 BC) to the massive churches built today, art has been used to portray beliefs and stories to its members. Although the images have changed throughout the years, there has been one collective piece of art that unified a religion. St Peters Basilica As far as art goes, St Peters Basilica has been a center piece of Catholicism for centuries. Beginning in the fourth century AD, it was first of basilical design, typically in the shape of a cross. Built on what is believed to be burial place of St Peter himself, it is believed that the original location of the church housed the burials and memorials of most of the popes from the time of its construction, until 15th century AD. Few other churches today can bolster a resume with such a long standing history. The very fact that the Apostolic Palace that houses the matriarch of the catholic religion is located within Vatican City outlines the very importance of this artistic masterpiece.
