Have you ever said something that wasn’t exactly true just to get attention and it turned into a big mess? Well, in the book Smoke Screen by Amy Goldman Koss, that’s what happens to the main character Mitzi. She later finds that the truth really does set you free. Smoke Screen is about an attention seeking young girl named Mitzi. She lives in California with her mom, dad and her brother Les. She has a best friend named Roberta, who she calls Birdy for short. In this book Mitzi tells a fib to her crush Mike Humphrey, so he will pay more attention to her. She asks Mike not to tell anyone but with news like that he couldn’t keep it to himself. When Mike tells Vanessa, who he thinks can help her with her problem an even bigger problem occurs. Mitzi was so overflowing with joy when her teacher moved Mike to sit beside her. The only problem was he didn’t even notice her. Until one day she was crying in class concerned he asked,” What’s wrong?” Even though it was only because she had an eyelash in her eye, she liked the attention so she said, “My mom is sick…but we don’t know how sick yet.” She thought because her mom was addicted to smoking it wasn’t that big of a fib. Well, it wasn’t till she started adding to it that she made the” sickness” a disease named Striptitis. At a time like this she needed help from her best friend, Birdy.
