The Historical Progression of African Americans
    America is a powerful nation with a colorful history. Today it is a country in which people of all ethnicities and backgrounds can share in the common good, but there is a dark side to America’s past that has hindered the progression of a certain group of people: African-Americans. Through intense struggles and oppression, African-American people have suffered some of the worst injustices imaginable to mankind, but through perseverance and determination, African-Americans have managed to succeed in a steady progression throughout history, leading to present day victories.
    In Unit One, life for African-Americans began a transformation with Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Once social issue they faced following their freedom was being accepted and treated as equals . In response to that they chose to pursue their education by making “the schoolhouse and the black church the essential institutions in the black community” (Davidson, DeLay, Heyrman, Lytle, & Stoff, 2008). The outcome of that was the blacks were trained to be teachers, black churches became the main “organizations in the African-American community controlled by blacks” and sharecropping agreements were made between white land owners and African-Americans (Davidson, DeLay, Heyrman, Lytle, & Stoff, 2008).
