“the yellowwallpaper” and women’s discourse This article interprets "The Yellow Wallpaper" to be filled with discrepancy. Ford believes the most crucial element of the narrators description is the unheard of contradictions. For example, the narrator has her own plan for recovery which is to continue writing and to become more involved with people. But John contradicts this possibility and reminds her of his profession. Ford even acknowledges the word "but" was used 56 times in this short story proving that when the narrator speaks, she was usually interrupted. later the narrator becomes less verbal as she moves further into the world of the wallpaper which is not making her any better. i agree with this interpretation because narrator doesn't seem to get any better by what John is suggesting but more so by her own diagnoses. What John is calling a mentally ill could actually be the tale of one woman's mental breakdown caused specifially by postpartum depression. Ford believes the yellow wallpaper represents women's discourse to the extent that the wallpaper is impossible to define. ...
