Captain Thomas Preston’s Account of the Boston Massacre
Captain Thomas Preston writes down his account of the Boston Massacre dates back to March 13, 1770. I think it is fascinating for historians to find such document on such a historical event. We live through life wondering what really happened years ago during these historical events and these documents help fill the gap with factual knowledge to better understand the history. Captain Preston begins his accounts starting with the arrival of his Majesty’s troops in Boston. The inhabitants of the town were rather resistant. The town’s people knew that the only reason the King sent troops was to bring down the morale of the American troops. The inhabitants had a malicious temper towards the troops. One account in Preston’s letter states how the soldiers were worried about being destroyed by the inhabitants since they carried concealed weapons under their clothes. I think the inhabitants had the beliefs that the redcoats being in Boston was a reminder of the once British power. These beliefs caused the inhabitants to not trust military. Preston goes on by stating how the townspeople split in two meeting houses ringing alarm bells. Being that Preston was Captain of the day, he thought the sound of the bell meant a fire. All the commotion along with cruel and horrid threats against troops leads to other thoughts. Preston has a spy townsman who tells him of the inhabitants’ intentions to cause violence. All Presto...
