Education is a life long journey for every student and there are many factors that contribute to an ideal education. A number of these factors include having families and the school systems as partners. According to Morrison (2009), “the educational landscape today is that parents, families, and communities are as much a part of the educational process as are children, teachers, and staff” (p.485). In this paper I will discuss the six types of parent / family involvement on how parents and families can work as partners with the teachers in the education of the children. The six types of parent / family involvement with the description and what to do to encourage parent/family involvement are:
Parenting Knowledge and skills Parenting knowledge and skills deal with educating parents on school rules, regulations and policies and provide families with the opportunities to learn about different range of subjects their children are learning. It is important for parents to understand school policies on disciplines, grading scales and other regulations that students are to bind by. According to Morrison (200), most families would like to know what is going and therefore would do better job in parenting their children. Parental reinforcement in line with school policies would foster a healthy relationship between families and the school system.
