In To Kill a Mockingbird, there are many things that occur which in our society today are considered to be wrong. But to most of the adults in this novel, by Harper Lee, they think that what they are doing is the right thing to do. While the adults are disconnected and unfair, the children have a better sense of equality than adults. These children are Jean Louise Finch, a nine year old tomboy, her brother Jem Finch who admires football and his father, and their close friend Dill, a summer visitor to Maycomb. The unjust adults referenced to consist of the Jury for Tom Robinson and Mrs. Gates who is Scout’s teacher, but there are a couple others. These people are the main reason why Maycomb society is the way it is.
    One reason why this is true is because Scout explains to Jem her thinking that, “There’s just one kind of folks. Folks” (304). This is a defining moment because it shows that a child understands that everybody is created equally, and that you shouldn’t base your opinion of somebody on the color of their skin. In this society, young children understand this simple but important concept that adults do not (304). Scout understands this concept and so does Dill because in the middle of the trial, Dill says that he doesn’t care that Tom is a Negro and that, “It ain’t right, somehow it ain’t right to do 'em that way.
