Tori Deines ESE 315: Survey of Exceptional Students Instructor Nikki Belt 11/19/2011 Autism: Needs and Considerations for Success Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) diagnosis is a very prevalent diagnosis with children. “Autism - or more precisely the autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) - represents a broad group of developmental disorders characterized by impaired social interactions, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors, or severely limited activities and interests” (U.S. Department of health and Human Services, 2011).Autism is the fastest growing developmental disorder and it is thought that Autism affects one out of every 150 children; with those types of numbers there is a chance that a teacher will encounter more than one student in this spectrum (Kenedy Krieger Foundation , 2007). It is important for programs and interventions to be set up for these students in order for them to be successful in the class, and in life. Doing this can prove to be tricky, but when we examine the problems with Autism we also discover that there are methods to help these children be functioning students within the education system. One of the main components we find with children with Autism is poor social skills.
