Response Paper on Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado
For my response paper I read Edgar Allan Poe’s story The Cask of Amontillado. The story is about Montresor, the narrator, who seeks revenge on Fortunato because of an umbrage that was never explained in the story. Montresor states in the first sentence that he wants to seek revenge on him. “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he centured upon insult I vowed revenge” (Poe 101). He reels Fortunato in by his weakness (the wine) to leave town but in reality he has planned out his death. Montresor never gives Fortunato a reason not to trust him or that he has a grudge toward him. Montresor gives him wine for his cough trying to get him drunk. Knowing that he is not sober, Montresor leads him into the underground chamber with a promise of tasting the Amontillado. Montresor then chains him to the wall and builds a new wall around him, which killed him when there were no longer any cries for help. I enjoyed reading this story because it kept me interested with the twisted works that were involved throughout it. Poe is a dark writer and you can see that through his characters. In this story, Montresor is the epitome of evil. Montresor refused to let Fortunato get away with his wrong doings and he wanted to stay in belief with his family motto, “Nemo me impune lacessit” (Poe 103), which means ‘No one provokes me with impunity’.
