The explosion occurred at the Ulyanovskaya coal mine in the city of Novokuznetsk, in south-central Russia, The accident was one of the worst mining disasters to hit Russia since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. In December 1997, a methane gas explosion killed 67 miners in the same region. According to initial reports, the explosion occurred after the collapse of the mine’s main roof and the spread of methane through its inner corridors. Failure to prevent a sudden increase in methane was initially blamed for the explosion that triggered the shaft collapse, trapping and killing miners. However, a statement from the General Prosecutor's Office in Moscow, said the explosion was triggered when mine managers were demonstrating equipment below surface to a visiting British auditor. All were killed. The mine is one of the newest in the region, having just begun operations in October 2002. The mine was equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Around the time of the explosion the system showed an unexpected increase in the volume of methane, but it was unclear whether officials had taken note of the increase.
