I think the education system still has a long way to go. In this country cultural values still defines how much of an education is suitable for a given culture. Being of Puerto Rican descent, had I stayed in Puerto Rico I would have been expected to marry by the time I was sixteen and start having babies. I would have never been given the choice of continuing me education, being a wife, a mother, and a homemaker would have been my job. Coming to the United States I still feel that the Hispanic community is still held to those standards to a certain extent. However, at least here I had a choice, and my choice was to go to school and get an education so I can provide for my family without having to depend on a man. My culture is still within me and I embrace it. However, I do not agree with all its standards. School in Puerto Rico was not as important as learning to cook, and clean. The education system reinforced that.

How does education reinforce inequality in your society?

    I feel that a lot of schools are creating inequality situations in regards to their students based on their backgrounds. If students come from a poor background they do not receive the same quality of education as those students who come from a more privileged background. Schools also do not receive the same funding. If your school is in a poor neighborhood the funds are limited therefore limiting the quality of education students can get. The book describes a term called “tracking” ...
