Illegal immigration has been an issue in this country for many years. The impact of illegal immigration presents a strain on social services and can result in a lack of sufficient employment opportunities in a country where the financial structure is already stretched thin and continues to have high unemployment rates among legal residents. By adding illegal immigrants to those searching for work and trying to support themselves and a family, relations between legal and illegal groups can be difficult in the best of times.
Arizona has been at the tip of the immigration battle in public media for the last few years. The state legislation argues that they must take charge of the immigration issue due to the federal government’s lack of action in rebuilding a broken and ineffective system. “Hundreds of immigration bills have been introduced in state legislatures this year as local officials express frustration with the failure of Congress to agree on a measure that would reform the nation’s immigration system” (Llorente, 2011).
American states along the border of Mexico and the United States have a history of immigration issues in the last century. The area that is now Arizona was originally colonized by the Spanish and later won it’s independence in the Mexican-American war. Those lands were later lost by Mexico to the U.S., but many of the people who colonized the region were still of Spanish descent.
