In the novel Anthem, Ayn Rand writes about the future dark ages. Anthem takes place in city of a technologically backwards totalitarian society, where mankind is born in the home of the infants and dies in the home of the useless. Just imagine, being born in to a life of slavery having no freedom, no way self expression, and no ego. 61
In the city, Equality 7-2521 was guilty of many transgressions and he was not like his brothers. Equality 7-2521 was different from his brothers because he was a lot smarter and he often got yelled at because he was learning a lot faster than his brothers. His teachers also shuned him because of his height. Apparently being taller than his brothers was a bad thing and was thought to be 'evil'. When Equality was fifteen, the house of vocations came and sent him off to be a street sweeper even though he wanted to be in the house of scholors. When he would go off to sweep by the fields he saw this woman named Liberty 5-3000; Also known as the 'Golden One'. When equality was sent to sweep he would stop and smile at her but have no contact. Contact with a woman was prohibited unless it was in the Palace of Mating....
