I am so stressed out! I hate school! I’m so overwhelmed! College sucks! These are all phrases that are likely to be seen posted on Face book by college students every day. It is normal to feel overwhelmed and stressed out during your college years, but when that stress takes complete control over your life, it could be more than just a little worrying. Today, I’ll tell you about generalized anxiety disorder and the effects it has on college students. But first we need to talk about what generalized anxiety disorder is, how to distinguish it from normal and healthy stress, and some symptoms and statistics. Later, I will tell you about some treatments.
Let’s begin! According to the Anxiety Disorder Association of America, Generalized anxiety disorder or GAD, is characterized by uncontrollable, excessive, and unrealistic worry about everyday things. People suffering from anxiety disorder tend to maintain a pessimistic outlook on life. They tend to always expect the worse to happen. This is called anticipatory anxiety. An example of this would be; a college student might go into a classroom on a test day automatically expecting to fail. Or they may be preparing for speech class expecting to pass out or have a panic attack.
