Eugene Sledge: With the Old Breed
In With the Old Breed, Sledge clearly explained all the hardships along with the good times he experienced while in the military. The fight against the Japanese caused many soldiers to give their lives, health, and sanity for the country (introduction). Sledge fought with Kilo Company, Third Battalion, and Fifth Marines on Peleliu and Okinawa. Instead of advancing in his education at the Marion Institute, Sledge made a conscious decision to join the military (5). Despite the fact of being young, without any doubt, Sledge knew for sure he wanted to be a part of the Marines Corps. In With the Old Breed, Sledge constantly speaks about the necessities of being clean and maintaining his uniform. The conversation with some of the veterans gave Sledge and the other soldiers confident to know that everyone gets fearful at one point of their lives while fighting. The shots from the grenade, bombs, and other machines were so loud and intensified that the only way the soldiers could hear each other was by yelling. Sledge stated that waiting is the most essential part of being in the war (55). The “brothers” did not just share deathful and harmful memories, but joyous moments also. The night that the Japanese secretly crept onto the company’s grounds, they struck one of Sledge’s friends.
